What does a virtual CFO cost for an Indian SME?
The factors that drive virtual CFO fees, how engagements are usually structured, and how to judge value.

There is no standard rate card for virtual CFO services. Fees vary widely because the role itself varies widely, from a monthly review of reports to deep involvement in planning, fundraising and controls. Understanding what drives the fee is more useful than a single number.
What drives the fee
- Scope. Reporting and review alone costs less than ownership of budgeting, cash management, controls and stakeholder communication.
- Time commitment. The number of review meetings and hours of analysis each month.
- Complexity. Multiple entities, locations, product lines or currencies add work.
- State of the books. If accounting is late or unreliable, early months need more effort to stabilise.
- Seniority and experience of the professional involved.
How engagements are usually structured
- Monthly retainer for an agreed scope, the most common model.
- One-time setup or onboarding fee for building reporting templates and processes.
- Project fees for defined pieces of work such as a financial model or a fundraising pack.
Comparing with a full-time hire
The relevant comparison is not only salary. A full-time senior finance hire also brings recruitment time, benefits, and a single person's range of experience. A virtual CFO is usually a fraction of that cost for a fraction of the time, which suits businesses that need senior judgement but not a full-time role. As the business grows, many companies move from a virtual CFO to an in-house finance leader, often with the virtual CFO helping to hire and hand over.
How to judge value
- Do you receive reliable reports on a fixed timetable?
- Are decisions being made with better information than before?
- Has cash visibility improved?
- Are the scope and deliverables written down?
Our pricing page explains how we structure fees. Every engagement starts with a written proposal and a fixed fee for the agreed scope.
